5 Tips for a Successful, Stress-Free & Gorgeous Newborn Session

𝟷. 𝚋𝚘𝚘𝚔 𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚕𝚢....​​

You're going to have plenty to think about once you bring your little babe home from the hospital...the last thing you're going to want to worry about is booking & planning a newborn session. I suggest taking care of all session details weeks or even months before your due date so you're fully prepared.

𝟸. 𝚖𝚊𝚔𝚎 𝚊 𝚑𝚊𝚒𝚛 & 𝚖𝚊𝚔𝚎𝚞𝚙 𝚊𝚙𝚙𝚘𝚒𝚗𝚝𝚖𝚎𝚗𝚝....​

If you're not someone that does this often, I get it....I typically do my own also but you just had a baby & these picture will be around for generations, treating yourself to some postpartum pampering before your photoshoot will be one less thing to worry about on the day of your session.​

𝟹. 𝚋𝚘𝚛𝚛𝚘𝚠 𝚊 𝚍𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚜 𝚏𝚛𝚘𝚖 𝚖𝚢 𝚌𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝚌𝚕𝚘𝚜𝚎𝚝....​

Who wants to spend money on a dress they will most likely wear one time? Your body just went through some major changes & will continue to for days, weeks or even months. The last thing you want to worry about when you're 7-9 months pregnant is if the dress you picked out will fit postpartum. I've hand-picked every dress in my client closet & most fit multiple sizes. This Free People dress was recently added to my client closet and fits size XS to XL, flatters almost every body type & photographs beautifully. ​

Spending money on newborn props isn't necessary. I have neutral colored wraps & blankets that will coordinate with any outfits you choose. Keep it simple during sessions so we can focus our attention on capturing your connection with your precious new babe instead of the props & outfits they're wearing.​

𝟻. 𝚜𝚌𝚑𝚎𝚍𝚞𝚕𝚎 𝚊 𝚕𝚒𝚏𝚎𝚜𝚝𝚢𝚕𝚎 𝚘𝚞𝚝𝚍𝚘𝚘𝚛 𝚜𝚞𝚗𝚜𝚎𝚝 𝚜𝚎𝚜𝚜𝚒𝚘𝚗....​

Golden hour is the absolute best lighting! It flatters every skin tone...no matter how little sleep you've been getting since your little one arrived & a lifestyle newborn sessions require very little pre-session prep. Newborn babies are unpredictable...you can literally do everything I suggest to prepare and they still might not settle during your session, but if you booked a lifestyle session, this won't matter. We'll be able to continue shooting no matter how your little one is feeling and the amount of stress that lifts off your shoulders should be enough to book one of these sessions……

Why I love it for photos: My go-to polish. It’s a perfect neutral color with a hint of pink. It compliments any wardrobe styling & skin tone.

BEAUTYBLENDER Makeup Sponge

Why I love it for photos: It gives you an airbrushed look & blends everything perfectly. I use it for my foundation, concealer & to “blend” everything after using bronzer & blush. There are less expensive ones out there but trust me, this one is the best.

BECCA Cosmetics First Light Priming Filter

Why I love it for photos: I don’t know much about primer…but I do know this one helps give me a brighter complexion when my skin looks dull. It moisturizes & also gives my skin a dewy look without looking oily, it’s subtle but I love this stuff!

IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream

Why I love it for photos: It evens out skin tones, covers skin imperfections including under eye circles & blemishes. A little tip…I don’t recommend spot treating any acne or blemishes the day of your sessions, it tends to draw more attention to it. Just apply as if the blemish isn’t there & I’ll take care of the rest when editing.

L'Oreal Paris Magic Skin Beautifier Color Correcting BB Cream

Why I love it for photos: I have mild rosacea so a BB cream is a must for me. I’ve tried them all & this one has been the absolute best product for anti-redness. I wear it under the IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream & over the BECCA Cosmetics First Light Priming Filter.

Ardell Demi Wispies False Eyelashes & Duo Adhesive Lash Adhesive Dark

Why I love it for photos: Lashes aren’t for everyone but let me tell you…they make a world of difference in your photos! I barely have any lashes at all so believe me when I say I’ve tried every mascara from Target to Sephora to Younique and they just don’t do the same for you as lashes do, in photos. They definitely take some practice & getting used to but once you get the hang of it, they are so worth it…I promise. Side note. Don’t wait until the day of your session to try lashes. If you mess them up, you take the chance of messing up all your eye makeup & having to start over. I know from experience….practice, practice, practice! :)

Accessories: Rounded Shaky Drop Earrings

Why I love it for photos: Everyone has a different style & preference when it comes to accessories. For me, I prefer something simple & dainty if my outfit has a lot of print or details and more bold accessories when I’m wearing something neutral & simple. I love these earring from Target! Whatever you choose for accessories, be sure to pick them out weeks in advance, it’s a part of the process that’s easy to forget.

Why I love it for photos: It keeps your makeup in place for hours, gives you a flawless finish & doesn’t settle into fine lines & wrinkles. It’s an absolute must for photos!

Not Your Mother's She's A Tease Volumizing Hairspray

Why I love it for photos: I keeps my “beachy” waves actual waves for hours without falling loose. It also add volume to my hair & tames all those baby hairs! If you struggle finding a hairspray that can hold without being “crispy”…this is it!

SPANX Shapewear

Why I love it for photos: I don’t care what size or shape you are….Spanx are your friend in photos. It smooths out undergarments & keeps everything in place so you can love on your spouse & twirling your kids without worry. When I was pregnant I wore BLANIQ which also doubled as compression leggings & tops!

How to Photograph Your Newborn During Social-Distancing

You’ve had your newborn session booked for months.

You planned outfits and studied your prep guide for your session.

Your due date is nearing and you’re worried about your photographer coming into your home, especially during this uncertain time.

You should still keep your session with your photographer. Postpone the session until you feel comfortable going in public or having someone in your home. Your photographer hates the thought of not being able to snuggle & photograph your newborn babe as much as you. Your first session together after this all passes will still be your first family session and it’ll be worth it to have someone else capture the photos you couldn’t quite get on your own.

My tips are intended to help you prepare for a session, where you are the photographer for your newborn session, so you can capture those first days, weeks or months yourself when you may not be able to have a professional shoot. By following the tips below, I hope that you’ll be able to capture this special time and have something you’re proud of & excited to print in a book, frame for your wall or share in an announcement but most importantly it’ll be something for you to look back on & cherish forever.

1. Set a date and time: This can be done after you’re home and settled from the hospital, but it’s probably the most important tip! Pick a time that works best for you and your family. Mornings usually work best and plan for the session to be 2-3 hours.

2. Stick with the session time: It’s easy to say I’m too tired today or let’s do it tomorrow. Have the mindset that this is your actual session and the photographer is coming to your home on this day & time for 2-3 hours.

3. Plan ahead: Before your due date plan outfits for the entire family. Have them clean, ironed (if needed) and hang them all in a closet together so no one accidentally grabs a piece before your session. Choose neutral outfits that coordinate and comfortable for everyone. For the baby: Choose a simple onesie that fits perfectly, not too big or a blanket/wrap that you can swaddle them without looking too bulky. You want to remember how itty bitty they were. Don’t forget to coordinate hats & headbands, if you choose to use them.

4. Supplies: Put these items together in a basket, in the nursery & separate from all the other baby items, so that it’s ready to go on the day you have chosen for your session. Diapers, wipes, pacifier, swaddling wraps, blankets, and a noise machine or download an app: Slumber & Sleep are popular ones, I use aSleep.

5. Location: Choose one or two areas inside or outside of your home that can be used as a “backdrop”. This way you don’t feel the need to clean your entire home before taking photos. Living rooms and the nursery usually work perfectly. Turn off all the lights and open all the blinds. Natural light is best, especially on newborn babies. Take a few test shots in those rooms prior to photo day. Be sure to use your spouse or another child to see if the lighting is good.

6. Choose the right camera: Using a digital camera is a great idea, but if you don’t have one….a phone will do the trick. Remember that capturing these moments is most important here, not the equipment you’re using. Just be sure to take some test shots (before your session) with the same camera or phone you plan to use.

7. Equipment: You don’t need fancy equipment but if you have a tripod and a self timer, use it! You can also prop your phone or camera up on a bookshelf or piece of furniture, use the self timer and viola! You have a family photo!!

1. The most important thing I can tell you (that I also tell every.single.client.) about this day is to keep your newborn baby awake for 2 full hours before your session. It will make a world of difference.

2. Take turns with the baby so that everyone has time to get ready that day. If you want to go au naturel, great! If you want full glam, go for it! Give yourself plenty of time to get as ready as you wish. You just had a baby. You deserve this time to get yourself ready for even a few photos.

3. Change, feed and rock your sweet little babe to sleep just before your session begins and go for it!

At this point, I’m unable to share every detail of photographing your baby as this is a skill that took years of education, workshops, practice, practice and more practice. However, the best advice I can give you is to take your time, take breaks for feedings, diaper changes and breaks that older siblings may need. Take turns with the phone/camera and take as many photos with each family member and the baby as you can. Mix it up and take portraits and candid shots. Look at Pinterest boards prior to your session to figure out what style you like. It’s important to remember this time together & document what you can; because for a lot of new moms & dads, this type of newborn session may be your only option.

Refer a NEW client and receive $25 towards your next session. Stack up referrals to earn a free session! There are no limits to the amount of referral credits you can earn. 

A few things to keep in mind:

• To be eligible to receive a referral credit you must be a client that has booked & paid for a session or have had a previous session with me.

• Referral rewards cannot be used for past or currently booked sessions; only future sessions

• Referral rewards cannot be used by anyone other than you.

• You can refer as many people as you like! There is no cap on the amount of referral credit you can receive.

• You will receive referral credits after the referred person has paid their session in full.

• You will not receive a referral reward if the referred person cancels their session.

• Your referral should let me know that you referred them when they book or on their questionnaire.

• If two clients refer one person; the first name given receives the referral credit.

Fall Family Session

$350 - fall sunset session

These sessions are scheduled about 2 hours before sunset. In my opinion, the absolute best time & lighting for photos!

Sessions are super laid-back & relaxed. We’ll hang out and take photos for about 1-1.5 hours up until the sun sets and we literally run out of light.

You’ll receive a gorgeous gallery with all your images two weeks after your session.

Your gallery will include at least 40 fully edited, high resolution, digital images ready for download.

“Sneak Peeks” from your session will be posted at least 3 days after your session to share with your friends & family.

• $50 non-refundable retainer will secure your time and date

• $300 remainder will be due at the time of your session

• 1-1.5 hour sunset session

• a client questionnaire & pre-consultation to discuss your hope and vision for your session

• complimentary wardrobe styling

• family session prep guide to help you prepare for your session
